Camp Thunder Thighs is on hiatus until it's safe to gather

VISION
Camp Thunder Thighs is about living the 5 principles I believe lead to deep, meaningful change in our relationship to our bodies - 1. Community, 2. A critical and intersectional political education, 3. Practical tools for healing and resiliency, 4. A non-judgmental space to recuperate our relationship to food, and 5. Movement whose only purpose is pleasure - for a weekend in a beautiful place so you can use these tools to heal yourself and change the trajectory of history. Basically.

I truly believe in the transformative power of radical self-love, political education, community-building and jiggling before breakfast. I also believe in the power of loving the body you're in
right now. Other interests include: smashing patriarchy, eating fancy desserts, and helping to build a world where every single person - regardless of size or health status - lives a life free from discrimination and bigotry. This intensive is about supporting you, teaching you tools, building community with you and eating a lot of marshmallows on the beach near many majestic redwood trees. Together we will break up with diet culture - and the mindset that keeps us in restriction mode.

Camp Thunder Thighs is for people of all sizes who feel drawn to doing the work of radical self-acceptance and body justice in a fat positive environment.

ABOUT THE HBIC (HEAD BABE IN CHARGE), VIRGIE TOVAR
I'm an unapologetic fat feminist who loves tiny shorts and bright lipstick. Fifteen years ago feminism saved my life. I stopped dieting and started living about seven years ago when I met a bunch of rad babes who taught me about the power of loving my body and deploying political education and compassion to change the way our intimate lives and culture work. I completed a Master's degree based on my research on how body size and race affect gender. I've written extensively on body image and fat discrimination, and I travel globally teaching people about these issues. I have been featured by the New York Times, NPR, Al Jazeera, and Self and was named on Bitch Media's Top 50 list for 2018.

ABOUT THE SPACE
  • Camp Thunder Thighs happens in a national park in the Marin Headlands with a beach, mountains and nature trails nearby.
  • There is minimal traffic or light pollution, with excellent night sky viewing.
  • There is wireless internet access, but phone signal is spotty outside and non-existent inside the event/sleeping space.
  • The building is dedicated to our group exclusively.
  • All meals are buffet-style and take place in a cafeteria-style eating space shared with other groups staying in the park.
  • There are several shared bathrooms and showers. There are no en suite accommodations available.
  • You must bring your own sleeping bag/bedding and towel. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash will be provided. There are several places you can buy affordable bedding on the way from SFO to Camp Thunder Thighs, including Target and Ross.
  • All sleeping accommodations are twin size bunk beds. There will be enough free beds that no one will be expected to sleep on a top bunk bed if that feels uncomfortable. You’re also free to move the mattresses around to create comfort for your body.
  • The accommodations are rustic. Think: Girl Scouts or dorms - a completely enclosed space with indoor heating and plumbing, conference space downstairs, nature at your doorstep, and communal bathrooms adjacent to the sleeping area, which is on the second floor of the building.
  • Accessibility: The overall terrain is pretty flat, but there is a bit of an incline (best guess: 3 or 4% incline) as you make it from the bottom of the site to the top. However, all scheduled activities take place in the same building as the sleeping quarters. The building we'll be using is accessible, and has a ramp. There are no stairs to the entrance of the dining quarters. There is a set of stairs (20 steps) to the main sleeping quarters. There is a limited number of beds on the ground floor that are reserved for people who need ground floor access. There are electrical outlets near 5 of the beds. Those spaces will be prioritized for folks with CPAP machines.
